Motifs for final patterns

These are the motifs I have narrowed down to for my final developments.

Layering up Patterns and floating motifs

This design is what I posted on stream, I find it a bit too busy and a few to many layers. The head phones are not really needed as the button symbols and touch pad represent the Ipod and the head phones are just adding another motif/element to the design.
For the background pattern I think it would look better and be easier on the eye if I kept to either the cassette or the button symbols, not  both.

For this design there is the repeat pattern of the button symbols in the background and i have just placed the ipod outlines randomly on top.
To get the gradient of colour on the ipod I just selected the outline with the magic wand and blended the four colours - pink, purple, green and blue, together.
I think this design needs another motif added to it, maybe the cassette the in block colour just to add a bit of variation.

This stripe design is quite interesting with how the button symbol pattern is the same all through the design but the stripes change the the colour of the symbols.
I find the actual stripes a bit boring and irrelevant to my theme. I tried to apply this with my motifs overlaying the symbol pattern and will not develop this design any further.

This design is just using the play symbol and rotating it to make this tile effect, once again it is not relevant to my theme, this was really to just see what the pattern looked like and playing around with colour.

I quite like this design and the depth it has with the button symbol with the speaker texture on the touch pad motif as the top layer.
I like how the  touch pad pattern has made shapes i the gaps and the pattern symbol shows through and reveals only snippets of the button symbol pattern.

Scatter Pattern

For the scatter patterns I fond the button symbols most successful and you can't see the grid where the new repeat starts.

I don't find this design as strong because you can see the grid in the pattern, this is because the ipod is rectangle and it is easier to see where  the repeat happens.

Patterns continued

This Cassette pattern  is looking at repeating the 4 cassettes that are rotated into a square shape.

For this design I didn't use the fill pattern tool on photoshop, i just copied and pasted the motifs and changed the scale.

For this repeat pattern of the stereo, I just chopped the ends off the stereo, so when I put it into a pattern it is a continuous pattern.

Repeat Pattern

I learnt how to make full drop and half drop patterns on photoshop with my motifs

Independent work texture and layering by hand

For Independent study we had to look at a Artist/Designer and develop our own design inspired by there work, but by using our own motifs and textures, and it had to be done by hand.

For my design I chose to use the textile designer Kaffe Fassett.

Colour Palette

I have revised my colour palette and have decided to source my colours from a textile designer Phillip Jacobs. It is one of the designs I posted in a previous post.

I like how for each colour in this print the are different tones of the same colour and how they flow into each other but are blocks of colour at the same time.

Independent Work for layer masks

I looked at layering a few of my motifs and textures, I used the layer masks to bring the texture through onto the motifs.

In this design i have used the motifs: touch pad, head phones, play symbols, cassette tapes and the speaker texture.

Layer Masks

Learnt how to use layer masks and here are a few examples of it, I focused on using the stereo to start off because it had lots of parts to it, so it was easier to understands the masks.

Cleaning up images

In class we had to clean up our scanned images, here are a few I have done so far...

More Scanned Images

This is the rubbing off the front of the stereo speaker, done with graphite.

And this is a water colour drawing of a record.

Contemporary Pattern Designs

Some designers that have really caught my eye are Aimee Wilder and  E W Moore. I have also looked in to geometric patterns and found a few inspirations as well.

These designs are all from the designer Phillip Jacobs. I like how they all have the similar style of using bright contrasting colours together and how there are different tones inside each of the bright colours to add depth to the textile.

These are all the tonal drawings, textures and line drawings i have sourced from researching stereos and ipods.
